Microhardness and biological behavior of AZ91D-nHAp surface composite for bio-implants

In the present research work, friction stir processing (FSP) has been adopted for fabri­cation of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) reinforced AZ91-D Mg-alloy matrix surface com­posite (NMMSC). The NMMSC was developed to replace conventional bio-implants materials short-term usage. prepared by adding nHAp rein­forcement in 12.5 % volumetric proportion alloy using grooving technique followed FSP. FSP parameters were selected, such as tool rotation 1000 rpm, 50 mm/min transverse speed, and 5 multi-passes. base alloy, normal FSPed, fabricated characterized study their micro-hardness values biological performances. Improvement microhardness value composites observed due smaller grain size a result dynamic recrystal­lization phenomenon. antibacterial properties FSPed specimens tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus found be superior compared PM. cytotoxicity & expressed cell viability MTT assay shows negligible toxicity PM insignificantly decreased incubation period extended. performance have improved refinement presence reinforcement material.
